The Maldives welcomed the decision to grant dialogue partner status to the Maldives at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Council Annual Summit 2022.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry revealed that the Maldivian government welcomed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s decision to grant the island nation dialogue partner status at the upcoming leaders’ summit. to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
The summit will begin in September 2022.
The decision was announced following the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on July 27-28.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the government is confident that becoming a dialogue partner will put the island nation at the heart of economic activities in the region.
It will also pave the way for the Maldives and other Member States to work even more closely towards common priorities.
In addition, it will also improve the way for the Maldives to actively engage in addressing maritime security issues and enhance cooperation with SCO member states on core government foreign policy issues.
Established on June 15, 2001, the SCO comprises eight member states, including India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
